Kimberly James held the first in a series of Home styling presentations at our newly renovated Keswick store Thursday October 5th. The sell-out event went off with aplomb.

After taking refreshments Andrea Higgs, our guest stylist from Olio Interiors, entertained and informed KJ customers, their family and friends as she showed how anyone can be a stylist in their own home.

Andrea’s challenge to the workshop group was, “How do you display a collection of things you love so they look united and balanced and not a mish-mash of clutter?”

To show us how it’d done, she took us on a journey through a series of creative and attractive vignettes or decorative displays. Andrea started each display with some favourite or sentimental items she’d brought from home.

You’d expect a stylist would feature some quite sophisticated pieces but no, she surprised us all by arranging nick knacks that anyone might have collected over the years. Andrea then spiced things up by adding some gorgeous decorative homewares gathered earlier while she wandered around our store and “Wow”, it all came together beautifully.

Andrea shared some very helpful and simple-to-apply advice on arranging soft furnishings before bringing the ‘formal’ part of the evening to a close with some tips on how you can develop a unique style or signature that’s true to your personality.

Our guests then enjoyed some more drinks and nibbles before reinforcing what we had just learned by creating their own vignettes using homewares and furniture from the Kimberly James store. Andrea also made herself available for one-on-one questions and advice.

All in all, it was a relaxed, informative and entertaining evening.

So, here are some of Andrea’s take-home hints and tips, as promised.

  • Cleverly arranged everyday books or magazines can be used to anchor a collection of objects and won’t cost a cent.
  • Use what you love, the unexpected and the sentimental, to add your personality to your home.
  • Include a natural element in all your displays, such as plants, shells, flowers or drift wood. This will add an organic balance to otherwise geometric arrangements.
  • When selecting cushions for your sofa or bed don’t be afraid to choose patterned fabrics for visual interest. Try using one natural pattern, a geometric pattern along with a textured fabric. Tie them together with a common colour across your selection.

Whether you attended the night or not, please feel free to give us your feedback and suggestions below – even suggestions about what themes we could cover at future presentation/workshops – like how to style your bedroom, or dressing-up your dining table for guests – whatever you like.
